What to see and do in Tapia de Casariego

Tapia de Casariego
Village
Tapia de Casariego is a seafaring town of about 3,930 inhabitants, capital of a coastal concejo of western Asturias, in the Eo-Navia comarca, where eonaviego or Galician-Asturian is still spoken. In 1916 it took the surname of Fernando Fernández-Casariego, the architect of its municipal independence. The coastline, much battered by the swell, alternates fine sandy beaches to the west with rocky shores harder to access to the east, and is crossed by the rivers Porcia, which forms the boundary with El Franco, Anguileiro and Tol. A dozen small fishing boats still sail from its port, and in July the town celebrates the feast of the Virgen del Carmen. The oceanic climate, with mild temperatures and a notable frequency of sea mists, is characteristic of this coastal strip of the Cantabrian Sea.
Lighthouse of la isla de Tapia
Monument
The Tapia lighthouse, or lighthouse of the island of Tapia, stands on a small islet joined to the mainland by a breakwater some hundred metres long, as part of the port of Tapia de Casariego. It is the westernmost lighthouse in the Principality of Asturias, 6 kilometres from the Eo ria, the border with Galicia, and it comes under the Port Authority of Avilés. Inaugurated on 1 September 1859, it originally consisted of a single-storey square building around a central courtyard, with the tower attached to the north face; after an extension in 1922, the 1962 renovation gave it its current square exterior shape, with the sign «Tapia» on that face. It was electrified in 1944; today it reaches 24 metres above sea level and emits groups of three white flashes every 19 seconds.
International Surf Championship of Tapia
Activity
Surfing arrived here in 1968 with the Australian brothers Peter and Robert Gulley; since 1971 the town has held an international championship bearing Peter's name, whose ashes were scattered on the beach he fell in love with.
Beach of Penarronda
Nature
Penarronda beach stretches beside the village of Santa Gadea, in the settlement of Barres, on the boundary between the concejos of Tapia de Casariego and Castropol, on the western coast of Asturias. It is 600 metres long and 315 metres wide on average, between the cliffs of La Robaleira and Punta del Corno, and is split in two by the Penarronda stream, or Dola river. It is the largest and most visited beach in the concejo, with easy access from the N-634 and good conditions for surfing; at its centre stands the well-known Pedra Castelo. It protects a dune field uncommon on the north coast — thirty-four hectares declared a natural monument on 3 October 2002, also a Special Protection Area and a site of community importance — where the sea stock survives and the Eurasian oystercatcher nests.
