What to see and do in Coaña

Coaña
Village
Coaña is an Asturian municipality in the Eo-Navia district, on the west bank of the river Navia, facing the Cantabrian Sea, where 3,320 inhabitants are spread between low cliff-bound land and an inland area of sierras that does not exceed 834 metres. It is one of the municipalities where Eonavian or Galician-Asturian is spoken. Its most notable heritage is the castro of Coaña, one of the finest examples, together with the neighbouring castro of Mohías, of Asturian hillfort architecture; already excavated in the nineteenth century, it is listed as a historic-artistic monument. In the Middle Ages these lands between the Eo and the Navia were linked to the episcopal see of Oviedo, with centres such as the monastery of Cartavio, documented since the year 970, and Aguilar castle.
Hillfort of Coaña
Nature
A fortified settlement on the left bank of the ria of the Navia, inhabited from the 4th century BC well into the Roman period; already excavated in 1877 by José María Flórez, it preserves around eighty huts and a castro sauna. Also known as Castrillón or Castelón de Villacondide, it was the first castro studied in Asturias and has had a teaching room since 1993. After the Civil War it was excavated by Antonio García y Bellido and Juan Uría Ríu, whose work helped establish the Celtic paradigm associated with the peoples of the north of the peninsula, although finds such as circular rather than rectangular dwellings, or burials without funerary urns, suggest that the castro culture has no direct link to the Celts.
Hillfort of Mohías
Nature
The municipality's second hillfort, far less visited than the one at Coaña but freely accessible; its circular structures and its ditch make it possible to follow on the ground the development of fortified settlement in western Asturias.
Reservoir of Arbón
Nature
The Arbón reservoir, opened in 1967 with a capacity of 38.20 cubic hectometres, dams the Navia river as it passes through the municipality of Coaña, downstream of the Doiras reservoir and only 12 kilometres from its mouth on the Cantabrian Sea, which makes it the river's first hydroelectric development. Its dam is located in the parish of Arbón, in the municipality of Villayón, on the border with Coaña, and its waters also extend into the municipality of Boal; in the reservoir the Navia receives the Cabornel and Riofrío rivers. Its sheet of water is set between wooded slopes and defines the landscape of the lower valley, stepped by successive hydroelectric developments; besides its energy use, the reservoir hosts sporting and recreational activities.
