What to see and do in El Franco

El Franco
Village
El Franco is a coastal municipality of the Eo-Navia district, whose capital, La Caridad, lies 115 kilometres from Oviedo and 60 metres above sea level; it also comprises the settlements of Miudes, Arancedo, Valdepares and the port of Viavélez, and is one of the municipalities where Galician-Asturian or Eonavian is spoken. Its relief, a coastal platform higher than that of neighbouring municipalities, is cut by the rivers Porcía and Mazo and rises to the south-east into the Sierra de Penouta. The municipality preserves six hillfort enclosures, among them El Cabo Blanco de Valdepares, one of the largest castros in the Lugo sector with four enclosures defended by ditches, and beside the castro of Arancedo remains of Roman gold mining have been found. It has 3,728 inhabitants.
Port of Viavélez
Curiosity
A small fishing shelter tucked into a narrow inlet, only two kilometres from La Caridad, the municipal capital; the pairing of an inland farming town with a seafaring port is a pattern repeated along the western coast.
Caves of Andina
Nature
The Cuevas de Andina are a system of caves of karstic origin located near the village of Andina, in the concejo of El Franco. The protected area covers 11.90 hectares of a valley formed by a karstic depression, whose rocks, made up of Lower Cambrian marbles from the Vegadeo formation, are a geological rarity in a concejo dominated by slate and quartzite. The depression is barely noticeable under the valley's abundant vegetation, among which yews, hollies, hazels and ash trees stand out. Declared a natural monument in 2002, the system is at an advanced stage of restoration for tourist access, and is the main natural attraction in the interior of El Franco.
Celtic Night of Porcía
Activity
A Celtic music festival held since 1983 on the banks of the River Porcía, on the western edge of the municipality; it is one of the veteran events on the northern peninsular Celtic circuit and takes place outdoors in high summer.
