What to see and do in Villayón

Villayón
Village
Villayón is an Asturian concejo of about 1,050 inhabitants, in the western comarca of the region, within the basin of the río Navia, which crosses it forming a natural border with Boal, Illano and Coaña. It belonged to the concejo of Navia until 1868, the year it became independent. Its territory, mountainous, is made up of ancient slates deformed by the Hercynian orogeny, traditionally used as roofing material for houses, and rises in sierras such as San Roque or Carondio, with peaks around a thousand metres. It is one of the concejos where eonaviego or Galician-Asturian is spoken. Dairy cattle today provide more than three quarters of employment, and among chestnut and oak groves the Oneta waterfalls plunge some fifteen metres.
Waterfalls of Oneta
Nature
Natural monument formed by three permanent waterfalls of the river Oneta, near the hamlet of Oneta, in the municipality of Villayón. The first and best known for its easy access, La Firbia, is also the largest, with a drop of about fifteen metres. Going down a narrow path leads to the second, La Firbia de Abajo or la Ulloa, smaller and less vertical, and then to the third, La Maserúa, the smallest and hardest to find because the path leading to it has disappeared. The group was declared a natural monument on 19 April 2001; the surrounding area also preserves several traditional mills in good condition.
Waterfall of Méxica
Nature
A waterfall hidden in dense woodland in the interior of Villayón, reached by a path among chestnuts and oaks; local oral tradition has attached legends to it that are still told in the hamlets of the municipality.
Slate of Carrio
Curiosity
A slate slab engraved with an inscription still debated by scholars, found in Carrio in 1926 and attributed to the Visigothic period or the early days of the Asturian monarchy; it is one of the most enigmatic epigraphic pieces in Asturias. It was discovered by farmers when they dug it up in the village of Carrio, in the municipality of Villayón, and is today kept at the Real Academia de la Historia. Written in Visigothic script, it is not a diplomatic document like most of those preserved from the period, but a kind of spell or curse tablet: it invokes the archangels Michael, Gabriel and other patriarchs to drive hail clouds away from a village called Ciuscau, where the servant Auriolo lived together with its cemetery, his brothers and his neighbours.
