What to see and do in Piñor

Piñor
Village
Piñor is a municipality in the province of Ourense, in Galicia, in the comarca of Carballiño, 29 kilometres from the Ourense provincial capital, with seven parishes at around 570 metres of altitude. Its relief combines mountains to the north and west, which in the Sierra de Faro reach 900 metres, with a peneplain watered by the Arenteiro river and its tributaries. On lands that the monastery of Oseira recorded as its own in the Middle Ages, prehistoric burial mounds are preserved and, in the parish of A Canda, a castro known as Outeiro do Castro. From the Roman period, remains of stone and brick pipes were found at Barrán, perhaps from a water conduit of a Roman villa. The church of San Mamede da Canda holds Renaissance silverwork beneath its Baroque remodelling.
Church of San Mamede da Canda
Monument
A single-nave church with a stone vault and corner buttresses, Baroque altarpieces and a Renaissance silver parish cross and chalice; one of its chapels bears the date 1668 and the coat of arms of the owners of the Pazo de Reda.
San Mamede society building
Curiosity
Opened in 1931, it housed the schoolmaster's home on the ground floor and two classrooms above, with wrought-iron balconies decorated with plant motifs; a plaque commemorates the emigrants' cultural society in Buenos Aires.
Castro de Guimarás hillock
Curiosity
A hillfort enclosure of sixty-four by fifty-four metres defended by the River Mirela, in a municipality where burial mounds have been documented since 1847 and where Roman pipes of stone and brick came to light at Barrán.
