The lagoon of Puzo do Lago Nature · Maside, Carballiño, Ourense The Puzo do Lago is a sheet of water located in the parish of O Lago, in the municipality of Maside, declared a natural area of local interest and surrounded by pine, oak and chestnut woods, with frogs, herons and ducks among its fauna. It occupies a former mining operation: the Romans mined arsenopyrite here and, it is said, gold, and the excavation ended up flooded, giving rise to the present-day lagoon. Oral tradition also preserves a legend according to which the Virgin Mary, on her way to Bethlehem and turned away by the stingy local villagers except for an orphan girl who gave her food, cursed the hamlet until it was submerged beneath the waters that today form the lake. Next to the lagoon there is a golf course and a dirt track where horse races and horseball matches are held. Photo: PBA96 (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Maside
