What to see and do in Cospeito

Cospeito
Village
Cospeito is a municipality in the Terra Chá comarca, in Lugo province, with its capital in the town of Feria del Monte, in the parish of Sistallo. It has around 4,200 inhabitants spread across twenty parishes, on flat terrain crossed by the Miño river and its tributaries the Támoga and the Abadín. Its lagoon, a refuge for ducks, herons and other species, is the best-known wetland in the Terra Chá and forms part of the Terras do Miño Biosphere Reserve. At the hamlet of Arneiro, German army antennas were erected before the Second World War to monitor the Atlantic, remaining in military use until 1962 and now gone. It also preserves the medieval tower of Caldaloba and holds the Festa da Filloa de Muimenta every first of May, declared a Fiesta de Interés Turístico (an official Spanish designation for festivals of touristic significance).
Lagoon of Cospeito
Nature
A permanent wetland also called the Santa Cristina lagoon, the largest in the Terra Chá; drained in the 1960s and recovered since the 1980s, it now covers close to twenty hectares included in the Natura Network.
Tower of Caldaloba
Monument
The torre de Caldaloba, also called the castle of Vilaxoán, is a fortress in the parish of Pino (Cospeito) documented since the 14th century, attacked during the irmandiño revolt and remembered as one of the last strongholds of the Galician nobility against the Catholic Monarchs; it has been a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) since 1994. It stands on the outeiro do Coto de Mato, in the area known as A Balura, dominating the natural passage between the comarca of Vilalba and the rivers Támoga and Miño, and makes use of a castro with four ditches. There, Constanza de Castro and her husband Fernán Ares de Saavedra held out for eleven months against the siege of Diego López de Haro. In view of its deterioration, the Diputación de Lugo announced in July 2022 the purchase of the plot where it is best preserved.
Medorra da Millara
Nature
A megalithic mound in the parish of Penalba, one of the best known prehistoric sites in Cospeito and evidence of the Neolithic settlement of a plain sown with mámoas among wet meadows and worked fields.
Festival of a Filloa de Muimenta
Activity
Every first of May, the parish of Muimenta, in Cospeito, has celebrated since 1992 its main festival dedicated to the filloa, the traditional Galician crepe, with live preparation and mass tastings; it began to raise funds for the Mostra Exposición Muimenta and in 2008 was declared a fiesta de interés turístico de Galicia (Galicia's tourist-interest festival designation). Since the year 2000 a drawing and story competition on the theme of the filloa has been held, in which pupils from numerous schools in the Terra Chá take part, and since 2005 an Escola de Filloeiros e Filloeiras has operated, where dozens of children learn to make them. In 2013, its declaration as a festival of international tourist interest was submitted to the Government of Spain.
Eryngium viviparum of the Cospeito Lagoon
Curiosity
On the waterlogged edges of the lagoon survives the dwarf thistle Eryngium viviparum, a threatened plant that has its best population in the world here and that has shaped the restoration work on this Terra Chá wetland.
Tower of Moman
Monument
A medieval tower of Cospeito protected as a bien de interés cultural (heritage site), the younger sibling of Caldaloba castle; both watched over the flat lands and lagoons at the heart of the Terra Chá. It stood in the parish of Momán, also called San Pedro de Momán, where its remains are preserved today alongside those of the tower known as Torre da Hedra, near the parish church, which holds a Baroque altarpiece.
Támoga River
Nature
A river that rises in the Xistral mountains, at Fontemuín (Abadín), where in its initial stretch it is called Santa Baia, and flows through the flatland municipalities of Abadín and Cospeito before emptying into the Miño next to the parish of San Xiao de Támoga, on the boundary between Outeiro de Rei and Cospeito. Together with its tributary the Guisande it feeds the lagoa de Cospeito, one of Galicia's most important wetlands, and its 233 km² basin of still waters shapes the flat landscape of the municipality. It is one of three rivers that give their name to the Parga-Ladra-Támoga natural area. Its name, of pre-Roman origin, comes from an Indo-European root meaning "dark-coloured", which it shares with other river names such as the Tambre, the Tamuxe, the Támega and the English Thames.
