What to see and do in Begonte

Begonte
Village
Begonte is a town of around 2,900 inhabitants located nineteen kilometres from Lugo, in the heart of the Terra Chá comarca; the terrain, dominated by the plain, barely rises at the Cordal de Ousá, 739 metres high, on the southern boundary with Friol. The Ladra river enters from the northwest and soon joins the Parga, which flows in from Guitiriz, before the two meet at Pacios and empty together into the Miño, which forms the boundary with Outeiro de Rei; the Támoga river likewise marks the boundary with Cospeito. Part of the territory lies within the protected area of the Parga-Ladra-Támoga Natura Network. The Camiño Norte crosses the municipality through Baamonde, where a thousand-year-old chestnut tree grows with an image of Our Lady of the Rosary carved inside its trunk.
Chestnut tree of the Chapel of Baamonde
Nature
A chestnut tree almost thirteen metres tall and 6.60 metres in girth whose hollow trunk the sculptor Víctor Corral cleared out and carved in 1971 to save it from the widening of the road; inside it shelters a chapel dedicated to the Virgin of the Rosary.
Víctor Corral House Museum
Monument
The Casa-Museo de Víctor Corral stands in Baamonde, in the municipality of Begonte, in the form of a Galician pazo built in the 1970s by the sculptor himself, who was born there in 1937 and who as a child already modelled sculptures with stones while tending livestock. After studying at the Arts schools of A Coruña and the Lonja in Barcelona and opening his first workshop in 1963, he gathered in this house-museum a garden of works in granite and bronze, among them a dovecote decorated with stones and minerals from all over the world, and an interior with wood, ivory and bronze sculptures on abstract and religious themes. In the church of Baamonde he also carved a Virgin of the Rosary inside a centuries-old chestnut tree. In 2015 he was named favourite son of the municipality of Begonte.
Nativity scene of Begonte
Activity
A handcrafted, electrically animated nativity scene created in 1972 that fills some 150 square metres with more than a hundred figures, half of them moving, recreating the trades of the Galician countryside; it is declared of Galician tourist interest.
Lagoons of Riocaldo
Nature
A complex of lagoons and wetlands tied to the courses of the Ladra and its tributaries, included in the Parga-Ladra-Támoga special area of conservation; its reed beds and riverside woods shelter the waterbirds of the Terra Chá.
Castle of Saavedra
Monument
Medieval fortress of the parish of Saavedra which, according to the documentation, hosted kings Vermudo II and Afonso V; with the tower of Camarasa it forms the military heritage of the concello of Begonte.
Lagoon of o Ollo
Nature
Wetland of the concello of Begonte which, with the lagoons of Riocaldo, completes the string of waterlogged areas of the Terra Chá, remains of the ancient lake that occupied this plain after the last glaciation.
Island of San Roque
Curiosity
River island formed at the confluence of two of the rivers that cross Begonte; its chapel and its grove made it a place of pilgrimage festival in a concello with no relief other than the lagoons.
Opening of the royal road from Madrid to A Coruña
Historical milestone
The new road crossed the Terra Chá by Baamonde and changed the life of the concello, which in 1885 would also see the arrival of the railway along the same corridor on its way to the coast of A Coruña.
