What to see and do in Abadín

Abadín
Village
Abadín is a municipality (concello) in Lugo province with around 2,200 inhabitants, in the comarca of Tierra Llana, 48 kilometres from Lugo. Its territory, covering 196 square kilometres, forms a fertile valley crossed by rivers and ringed by mountains: the Sierra de Carba to the west, the Gistral range to the northwest and the Toxiza range to the northeast, which border the Lugo plateau. The highest peak is Lombo Pequeno, at 1,027 metres, in the Serra do Xistral, while the village itself sits at 512 metres above sea level. The climate, transitional oceanic, brings cold, rainy winters and mild, dry summers, with abundant rainfall. It preserves the Romanesque church of Santa María and lives from dairy farming, with its own cheese dairy at the hamlet of Gontán.
Church of Santa María de Abadín
Monument
Former parish church of Abadín, at the place called A Torre, on a rise overlooking an extensive area of farmland with a mountainous landscape in the background. Built in Romanesque style in the first half of the 12th century, it has a rectangular plan of granite ashlar and a facade with a round arch of large voussoirs, a rose window carved from a single block of stone, and a single-tier bell-gable. On either side appear the coats of arms of the House of Luaces, lords of the coto of Abadín since they bought it from the chapter of Mondoñedo in 1562; their arms are repeated on the capitals of the triumphal arch and on the vault of the main chapel, dating from the 16th century and rebuilt in Isabelline Gothic. In the atrium stands a granite cruceiro with Christ on the front and the Pietà on the reverse.
Lombo Pequeno
Nature
The highest point of the municipality of Abadín at 1,027 metres, at the end of the Serra do Xistral; its slopes of wet heath and peat bog feed the headwaters of several rivers and form one of the harshest landscapes in the Terra Chá.
All Saints' Fair of Abadín
Activity
A November fair that gathers at Gontán stockbreeders and dealers from all over the Terra Chá and the neighbouring Mariña, heir to the cattle markets that sustained the municipality's dairy and meat economy for centuries.
Castle of Castromaior
Monument
Medieval fortification declared a monument in the concello of Abadín, on the step that separates the chairega plain from the mountain ranges that descend towards A Mariña by the pass of la Xesta.
The Camino del Norte as it passes through Abadín
Activity
Stage of the coastal Jacobean route between Mondoñedo and Vilalba, which crosses Abadín after climbing the pass of A Xesta; it is one of the sections of greatest height difference of the Camino de Santiago in the lands of Lugo.
