Tower of Caldaloba Monument · Cospeito, Terra Chá, Lugo The torre de Caldaloba, also called the castle of Vilaxoán, is a fortress in the parish of Pino (Cospeito) documented since the 14th century, attacked during the irmandiño revolt and remembered as one of the last strongholds of the Galician nobility against the Catholic Monarchs; it has been a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) since 1994. It stands on the outeiro do Coto de Mato, in the area known as A Balura, dominating the natural passage between the comarca of Vilalba and the rivers Támoga and Miño, and makes use of a castro with four ditches. There, Constanza de Castro and her husband Fernán Ares de Saavedra held out for eleven months against the siege of Diego López de Haro. In view of its deterioration, the Diputación de Lugo announced in July 2022 the purchase of the plot where it is best preserved. Photo: Estevoaei (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Cospeito
