What to see and do in Pastoriza

Pastoriza
Village
Pastoriza is a municipality of around 2,800 inhabitants at the eastern end of the Terra Chá, in Lugo province, with a livestock-based economy and dotted with pre-Roman hillforts. The Miño river, which rises in the neighbouring municipality of Meira, runs through its territory. Its parish of Bretoña experienced a particularly significant period in the 5th century, when a Christian community that had arrived from Brittany founded a bishopric there; the church of Bretoña is now considered the cradle of the diocese of Mondoñedo-Ferrol, whose episcopal see it was until the 8th century. At the Fomiñá lagoon, where the Miño rises, a monument and a stone cross (cruceiro) commemorate this. Established in 1821 under the name of Vián, it adopted its current name in 1840 and today comprises twenty parishes.
Church of Santa María de Bretoña
Monument
A parish occupying the site of the episcopal see of Britonia, founded by Britons who came to Galicia in the 6th century; its bishop Mailoc already appears in the acts of the council of Braga of 572, and the diocese of Mondoñedo descends from that see.
Hillfort of Sa
Nature
A pre-Roman fortified settlement looking out over the plain, with a cave beneath the croa that fed local legends; it is reached on the PR-G 153 path, which links the castro with the Fonmiñá lagoon and the A Riboira recreation area.
Lagoon of Fonmiñá
Nature
A lagoon from which rises the water that much of local tradition holds to be the source of the Miño; it is included in the Terras do Miño Biosphere Reserve, and a monument and a cruceiro by Paz Picallo and Manuel Mayo were raised beside it.
Interpretation Centre of Britonia
Monument
A museum space at Bretoña devoted to the Britons who settled in the Terra Chá fleeing the Saxon invasions; it explains the diocese of Britonia, the figure of Bishop Mailoc and the insular Celtic imprint in the north of Lugo.
Church of San Salvador da Pastoriza
Monument
Parish church of the municipal capital, head of a concello of twenty parishes that in the early Middle Ages was divided between the domains of the monasteries of Meira and Lourenzá.
Creation of the municipality of A Pastoriza
Historical milestone
The municipality, constituted in 1821 with the name of Vián, came to be called Pastoriza; its territory includes Bretoña, seat of the ancient Briton diocese recorded in the Parochiale suevorum.
Galician Veal from the Terra Chá
Food and drink
The meadows of A Pastoriza sustain one of the largest cattle herds in Galicia; its calves are covered by the Ternera Gallega protected geographical indication, raised on mother's milk and pasture.
