Village
Cervantes is a municipality in Lugo province covering 276 square kilometres with barely 1,100 inhabitants, spread across 21 parishes, at the heart of the Os Ancares Lucenses biosphere reserve, declared in 2006 together with the mountains of Navia de Suarna and Becerreá. Its mountains, which reach 1,975 metres at the Mustallar and border León, hold a remarkable floral richness, with close to a thousand species of vascular plants, including sixteen orchid species, and forests of oak, beech, yew, chestnut and birch where the short-toed snake eagle, the capercaillie and up to a hundred species of vertebrates live. In this setting the pallozas of Piornedo and Donís survive, traditional stone buildings with vegetal roofs, along with the castle of Doiras, one of the best preserved in Galicia.
Monument
Hamlet in the parish of Donís at an altitude of around 1,300 metres that preserves fourteen pallozas, dwellings with a rounded plan and a thatched roof; it is listed as a historic ensemble and protected as a cultural asset.
Monument
The castelo de Doiras, also called Castelo da Ferrería, is a medieval fortification built on a crag next to the Cancelada river, in the parish of Vilarello in the Lugo municipality of Cervantes. Built in the 15th century by Paio Guindós to defend the entrance to the Way of Saint James in Galicia, it is possibly the best-known monument of the serra dos Ancares; it belonged to the counts of Grajal de Campos and the Duke of Sexto, and passed through several owners before the municipality of Cervantes, together with the Diputación de Lugo, bought it in 2024. The enclosure, rectangular in plan with seven towers, preserves a fourteen-metre keep with rooms holding deteriorated fresco paintings. It was declared Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) on 17 October 1994.
Nature
The Mustallar, at 1,935 metres, is the highest peak of the Serra dos Ancares and serves as a natural border between the provinces of León and Lugo, of which it is the highest point. The ascent can be made relatively easily from the Porto dos Ancares, passing first the Cuíña and Penalonga peaks, from the León hamlet of Burbia, in A Veiga de Espinareda, or from the hamlet of Piornedo, in the municipality of Cervantes. All the paths converge at the Alto de Golada de Porto, from where, within a few metres, the summit is reached by climbing its northwest face, with a considerable slope but no great difficulty. At the summit there is a small sign and a box where hikers leave their notes.
Nature
The Reserva de la Biosfera de Os Ancares Lucenses e Montes de Cervantes, Navia e Becerreá was declared by Unesco in 2006 and protects the forests, brañas and summits shared by these three municipalities, covering 53,664 hectares of the Ancares range. It is a territory of Atlantic climate at high and medium mountain altitudes where the confluence of the Eurosiberian and Mediterranean regions generates notable biodiversity, with northern species alongside others typical of the Mediterranean. The landscape is crossed by the valleys of the river network draining towards the Navia river, with a difference in elevation of up to 1,600 metres between its bed, at 300 metres, and the 1,935 metres of the Mustallar summit. In Cervantes some 1,028 species of vascular plants have been catalogued, almost half of those found in the whole of Galicia.
Curiosity
As well as Piornedo, the concello preserves pallozas in Vilarello, Donís, Robledo, Pozo, Pando and Sevane, a type of dwelling with an oval plan and a straw roof that survived here well into the 20th century.
Curiosity
Aerial cableway of between eight and eleven kilometres installed at the beginning of the 20th century to bring down timber from the woods destined for railway sleepers; it operated until 1925.
Curiosity
These mountains host around 1,028 plant species, close to half of all those catalogued in Galicia, among them sixteen species of orchids and thirty-three of ferns.
Activity
Palloza in Piornedo inhabited until 1970 and afterwards turned into an ethnographic museum, which allows one to see from the inside how family and livestock shared out the space under a single thatched roof.
Monument
A fortress built in the 15th century by Paio Quindous as the residence of the lineage that gives it its name, in the parish of Quindous, within the concello of Cervantes, and declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) since 1949. It sits on very pronounced uneven ground, about 4 metres high on its east front and 9 metres on the west, which reinforces its defensive qualities. The main front is dominated by a central section around 20 metres long, flanked by two cylindrical towers with gunports oriented to defend the entrance; the walls are of irregular lousa rubblestone and the roofs are gabled on the main section and conical on the towers. A heraldic stone is preserved bearing the inscription “Soi la cassa de Quindos fondada e nesta montaña”. Two of its towers still stand, which once controlled one of the passes from the Ancares massif toward El Bierzo.
Monument
One of the three castles declared a bien de interés cultural in the concello of Cervantes, together with Doiras and Quindous; its presence demonstrates the density of seigneurial fortifications in these mountain valleys.
Monument
A seigneurial tower in the hamlet of Donís, one of the vestiges of the medieval past of the Ancares; it stands in the same settlement that preserves pallozas with vegetal roofing at more than a thousand metres of altitude.
Nature
The río Ser rises at almost 1,800 metres above sea level on the western slopes of the sierra de los Ancares, at the confluence of the Moreira and Mazo streams, near the village of Piornedo. It runs through the northern part of the municipal district of Cervantes, separating the hamlets of Castelo and Donís, before entering Navia de Suarna and flowing into the río Navia after a course of 23.1 kilometres, through woods of alder, ash and oak that hide its bed within a canyon. Its basin, covering 114 square kilometres, is included in the Cruzul-Agüeira Site of Community Importance and in the Os Ancares Lucenses y Montes de Cervantes, Navia y Becerreá Biosphere Reserve, of which the municipality of Cervantes has been part since 2006.
Historical milestone
The fortress in the parish of Vilarello obtained on 17 October 1994 the highest heritage protection as the greatest and best preserved example of medieval civil architecture in the concello of Cervantes.
Food and drink
A winter sausage made with pork bones and meat stuffed into the animal's stomach, known in these valleys as butelo or pigureiro; it is boiled for long hours and served with cachelos and greens.
