What to see and do in Baralla

Baralla
Village
Baralla is a municipality in Lugo province, in the Los Ancares comarca, with 2,396 inhabitants according to the 2025 register, situated at 500 metres above sea level at the eastern edge of the Meseta Lucense and watered by the Neira river. It was called Neira de Xusá until 1975 and is made up of thirty parishes. It originated as a Celtic settlement that was Romanised after the founding of Lugo, and in the Middle Ages the lords of Espiña and other local nobles checked Almanzor's raids there. It preserves the chapel of Santa Marta, several Romanesque churches and an obelisk in memory of Magín Espiña, and holds its festival of San Vitorio on 27 August. Gonzalo Torrente Ballester immortalised its name in La saga/fuga de J. B.; among its parishes stand hillforts such as those of Lebruxo and Berselos.

Nature
Range with a maximum altitude of 844 metres that gives its name to several parishes of the concello and serves as a transition between the flat lands of the Neira and the heights that already announce the Ancares.
Neira River
Nature
The Neira river rises in the Serra do Portelo, at 840 metres above sea level, in A Fontaneira (Baleira), and runs 56 kilometres with a basin of 830 km² before flowing into the left bank of the Miño, at the point where the municipalities of Guntín, O Páramo and O Corgo meet; it receives the waters of the Tórdea and the Sarria as its main tributaries. As it passes through Baralla it forms the valley of Neira de Xusá, where the town sits, amid forests of oaks, chestnuts and birches that give it a reputation for great fish-life and ecological richness.
