What to see and do in Láncara

Láncara
Village
Láncara is a concello of about 2,500 inhabitants in the comarca of Sarria, in the centre-east of the province of Lugo, with its capital at A Pobra de San Xiao and twenty-five parishes. It is known as the birthplace of Ángel Castro Argiz, who left here in the late 19th century and became the father of Fidel and Raúl Castro; the latter visited his ancestors' family hamlet in July 1992. The territory preserves megalithic and castro remains, as well as the bridge of Carracedo, raised in Roman times over the Neira river, which served as a crossing for pilgrims heading to Santiago, who were obliged to pay a toll to cross it. Mendizábal's disentailment divided the territory into the municipalities of Láncara and Puebla de San Julián, reunited again in 1889; the railway, which arrived in 1878, moved the capital to Puebla de San Julián in 1958.
