Castle of Quindous Monument · Cervantes, Ancares, Lugo A fortress built in the 15th century by Paio Quindous as the residence of the lineage that gives it its name, in the parish of Quindous, within the concello of Cervantes, and declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) since 1949. It sits on very pronounced uneven ground, about 4 metres high on its east front and 9 metres on the west, which reinforces its defensive qualities. The main front is dominated by a central section around 20 metres long, flanked by two cylindrical towers with gunports oriented to defend the entrance; the walls are of irregular lousa rubblestone and the roofs are gabled on the main section and conical on the towers. A heraldic stone is preserved bearing the inscription “Soi la cassa de Quindos fondada e nesta montaña”. Two of its towers still stand, which once controlled one of the passes from the Ancares massif toward El Bierzo. Photo: Xose Troiano (CC BY 3.0) What to see and do in Cervantes
