What to see and do in Oroso

Oroso
Village
Oroso is a concello of around 7,800 inhabitants in the region of Ordes, in the province of A Coruña, with its seat at Sigüeiro, situated on the right bank of the river Tambre, which marks its southern boundary with Santiago de Compostela, only 16 kilometres away. Its population grew sharply as it became a residential area of the Galician capital. The municipality, with a humid oceanic climate, extends between 220 metres by the Tambre and the 369 metres of Mount O Petón, and is also watered by the rivers Maruzo, Samo, Cabeceiro and Lengüelle. The English Way enters over the medieval bridge of Sigüeiro.
Bridge of Sigüeiro
Monument
The Sigüeiro bridge is a stone-masonry structure over the Tambre river that links the concellos of Santiago de Compostela and Oroso, on the N-550 road between A Coruña and Santiago. It was built in the 14th century by order of Fernán Pérez de Andrade, O Boo, and was modified in the 15th century. Nearby, in 1846, the clash took place between troops of the Spanish government and the insurgents led by Colonel Miguel Solís, which ended in the defeat of the latter and their execution by firing squad in Carral. Through this bridge the pilgrims of the Camino Inglés who come down from Ferrol and A Coruña toward Compostela enter Oroso.
Palace of Meixime
Monument
Manor house in the parish of Oroso, the main example of hidalgo architecture in a concello that has grown a great deal in recent decades because of its closeness to Santiago de Compostela.
Tambre River through Oroso
Nature
The Tambre defines the southern edge of Oroso, where it receives the waters of the Maruzo, the Samo and the Cabezeiro; its whole course is included in a special conservation area of the Natura 2000 Network.
Recouso treasure
Curiosity
Group of gold chains and pendants of the 5th and 4th centuries BC found at the place of Recouso, one of the most notable pieces of pre-Roman goldwork to have appeared in the interior of the province of A Coruña.
Camino Inglés through Oroso
Activity
The Jacobean route that arrived from the ports of Ferrol and A Coruña enters Oroso by the medieval bridge of Sigüeiro, on the second-to-last day before Compostela; it was the itinerary of pilgrims from northern Europe.
Banks of the Tambre in Sigüeiro
Nature
The Tambre marks the southern edge of the concello and forms at Sigüeiro a wooded corridor of alders and ash trees fitted out with riverside walks, a refuge for otters at the gates of Santiago.
The English pilgrimage through the Sigüeiro crossing
Historical milestone
In the late Middle Ages, pilgrims who arrived by sea at Galician ports crossed the Tambre via the Puente de Sigüeiro, a 14th-century stone bridge remodeled in the 15th, on their final leg towards Compostela, which made Oroso an obligatory stop on the English Way.
Galician Lacón (cured pork shoulder)
Food and drink
A salted and cured pork shoulder covered by a protected geographical indication, an indispensable piece of the cocido, served boiled with turnip tops, potato and chorizo at the winter festivities.
