What to see and do in Tordoia

Tordoia
Village
Tordoia is a rural municipality in the region of Ordes, in the province of A Coruña, with its seat at A Pontepedra and divided into ten parishes — among them Andoyo, Angeriz, Bardaos, Cabaleiros, Castenda, Gorgullos, Leobalde, Numide, Tordoia and Villadabad — amid gentle hills and streams, with altitudes ranging from 300 to the 569 metres of Monte Castelo. It holds megalithic monuments such as the Cabaleiros dolmen, also known as Casa da Moura or Casa dos Mouros, declared a Monumento Histórico-Artístico (a former heritage-protection category, predecessor of today's BIC) in 1975: a mound around 30 metres in diameter with a polygonal burial chamber formed by eight slabs. The Pedra Longa is also preserved. It has around 3,152 inhabitants.
Dolmen of Cabaleiros
Nature
The Cabaleiros dolmen, also called Casa da Moura or Casa dos Mouros, is a megalithic monument located in the parish of Cabaleiros, in the concello of Tordoia (A Coruña province), Ordes comarca. Owned by the Diputación de A Coruña, it stands on a mound about thirty metres in diameter and two metres high; it is made up of seven large orthostats and a capstone measuring 4 by 3.40 metres, with an open polygonal chamber and a corridor facing east, and it is dated to the third millennium BC. According to legend, the name Casa da Moura comes from a moura who carried the great slab on her head while weaving a dress. It was declared a Monumento Histórico-Artístico in 1975, today considered a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), and it is the most notable prehistoric monument in inland A Coruña.
Tordoia Long Stone
Monument
Monolith included in the concello's heritage catalogue, one of the stone landmarks that accompany the megalithic ensemble of Tordoia, a territory where Neolithic communities marked the pasture lands with tumuli.
Church of Santa María de Castenda da Torre
Monument
Parish church of Castenda da Torre, whose place name recalls the manorial tower that dominated the hamlet; it is one of the churches that structure the very scattered parishes of the interior of the concello of Tordoia.
Estevo mill
Curiosity
Old watermill included in the concello's heritage catalogue, evidence of the use made of the numerous rivers, springs and streams that Tordoia's own municipal coat of arms claims as a mark of identity.
Chestnut soutos of Tordoia
Nature
Patches of chestnut spread over the ten parishes of the concello, testimony to an economy that revolved for centuries around the chestnut; the municipal coat of arms bears precisely a doubly crowned tree.
Festival of Santa Mariña de Anxeriz
Activity
A pilgrimage festival on 18 and 19 July in the parish of Anxeriz, one of the great events of the concello's calendar, with a procession, auctions and a vermouth session on the festival ground.
Tordoia recovers its Galician name
Historical milestone
The concello officially replaces in 1985 the Castilianized spelling Tordoya with the Galician form Tordoia, within the process of restoring native place names undertaken in Galicia in those years.
