What to see and do in Ordes

Ordes
Village
Ordes is the capital of its region, with around 12,500 inhabitants, situated on a plain halfway between Santiago de Compostela and A Coruña, on the N-550. Near the town centre are the castros of Ceidón and Gosende, remains from the hillfort period. During the Middle Ages it was part of the county of Trastámara and was divided among several manorial jurisdictions, including Montaos, granted by Alfonso VII to the cathedral of Santiago in 1124. The emigration of the 1960s to the cities and to Europe slowed in the following decade, and today a quarter of the population works in the primary sector, above all dairy cattle farming; textiles and trade also stand out. It has held a well-attended mushroom festival since 1989.
Palace of Codeseda
Monument
Manor house in the parish of Leira, one of the two great hidalgo residences preserved in the concello of Ordes; its ashlar fabric and the enclosing wall of the estate sum up the model of the agrarian pazo of the A Coruña interior.
Lengüelle River
Nature
River that marks the western boundary of the concello of Ordes before delivering its waters to the Tambre; it runs through a territory of slate and enclosed meadows that has sustained the comarca's livestock farming for centuries.
Festival of o Champiñón de Ordes
Activity
Gastronomic event held since 1989, generally on the last weekend of April, around the mushroom growing that took root in the comarca; it is the busiest date in the Ordes calendar.
Desordes Creativas
Activity
Urban art festival that has gradually covered the party walls and walls of the town with large-format murals, turning the centre of Ordes into an open-air museum that can be walked all year round.
Festival of o Lacón de Mesón do Vento
Activity
The festa do lacón de Mesón do Vento has been held since 1999, every February, in the vila of O Mesón do Vento, parish of Ardemil, in the concello of Ordes, which grew up alongside the old N-550 road between A Coruña and Santiago de Compostela, at its junction with the roads to Cerceda and Betanzos. It centres on lacón con grelos, a centrepiece of traditional inland Galician cooking and of the peasant winter.
Hillfort of Ceidón
Nature
An Iron Age fortified settlement that preserves part of its parapets and ditches; together with the castro of Gosende it documents the castro settlement of the Ordes plateau before the Romanisation.
First Mushroom Festival of Ordes
Historical milestone
The town organizes for the first time in 1989 the festival devoted to the mushroom, which has been repeated every year since and has made this indoor crop a mark of the municipality's identity.
Ordes Mushroom
Food and drink
The growing of mushrooms in sheds on compost of straw and manure took root strongly here and gave rise to an annual festival at which it is prepared grilled, stuffed, in empanada and in scrambled egg.
The Juanjo Liñares Costume Museum
Monument
The Juanjo Liñares Museum opened its doors in Ordes in January 2010 with the legacy left by the dancer and choreographer who gives it its name. It brings together more than a thousand costumes from different origins, of which around three hundred are exhibited at any one time, along with other collections of the artist, such as crosses or castanets. Its director is the former mayor of Ordes, Manuel Viqueira Verea.
The Lacón Festival of Ordes
Activity
A celebration devoted to lacón boiled with turnip tops and potatoes, the central dish of the Galician winter. The villa also has a mushroom festival at the end of April, taking advantage of the damp hills of the concello.
