What to see and do in Frades

Frades
Village
Frades is a rural municipality of around 2,100 inhabitants in the upper basin of the Tambre, with its seat at Cimadevila, in the region of Órdenes, divided into twelve parishes and 138 hamlets; its name comes from the Latin fratres. Under the Ancien Régime it belonged to the province of Santiago, split between the jurisdictions of Mesía and Folgoso, under the tutelage of the Count of Altamira, and it held a large livestock market, now vanished. At the pazo of San Martiño de Galegos, Queen Maria Anna of Neuburg stayed in 1690, while travelling from Compostela to the court; in gratitude, her husband Charles II granted the owners of the pazo the right of the chain, which gave asylum to those pursued by the law. The municipality also preserves several chapels, such as that of San Roque, in Moar, and that of San Xulián, in Céltigos.
