What to see and do in Trazo

Trazo
Village
Trazo is an overwhelmingly rural concello of around 3,000 inhabitants in the region of Ordes, in the province of A Coruña, situated some twenty kilometres north of Santiago de Compostela, on an undulating plateau that slopes south towards the valley of the river Tambre, which it crosses by the bridge of Ponte Albar. Its highest points, in the north, are Pedras Negras (462 metres) and Berdieiras (507 metres). It lives from dairy and beef cattle farming, with highly modernised livestock. It belonged to the old jurisdiction of Montaos, documented since the 12th century and governed by the Bermúdez de Montaos, descendants of the counts of Traba, with a fortress at Lestrobe, now lost. At the castro of Chaián, twenty-five hand querns and a Roman gallery containing weapons and tools were found in 1883.
Church of Santa María de Chaián
Monument
Church built in the late 12th or early 13th century, the most complete example of Romanesque in Trazo, a concello that also preserves the churches of San Pedro de Benza and San Xoán de Campo.
Palace of Vilacoba
Monument
Manor house arranged around a 15th-century defensive tower, evidence of the transition between the medieval stronghold and the residential pazo that became widespread in Galicia from the 17th century onwards.
Albar Bridge
Monument
A stone-masonry bridge with five semicircular arches, in the parish of Xavestre, over the course of the Tambre river; through it the road coming from Santiago de Compostela and Santa Comba enters the concello of Trazo, and for centuries it served as a passage between the lands of Trazo and those of the Compostela comarca, linking this parish with the neighbouring parish of Fecha, already within the municipality of Santiago.
Chonia River
Nature
Stream that crosses the parish of Xavestre and which, from the 17th century onwards, drove the series of flour mills that still dot its course; its enclosed valley preserves a fine riverside wood of alders and willows.
Reservoir of o Tambre en Xavestre
Nature
Dam built on the Tambre in the parish of Xavestre, on the stretch where the river narrows before entering the lands of Santiago; its reservoir alternates still waters with banks of scrubland.
Chonia River mills
Curiosity
Along the Chonia, in the parish of Xavestre, a string of flour mills built from the 17th century onwards is preserved; some have been restored and still show the horizontal wheel and the millstones.
Church of San Pedro de Benza
Monument
A Romanesque parish church on the plateau that descends towards the Tambre, with a doorway of archivolts and carved corbels; together with San Xoán de Campo it forms the best rural Romanesque of the concello.
Mount Berdieiras
Nature
Summit of 507 metres and the highest point of a concello of undulating relief that descends gently towards the south, towards the Tambre valley; from the top much of the comarca of Ordes and the natural corridor that links Santiago with these lands can be commanded.
Honey of Galicia
Food and drink
A honey covered by a protected geographical indication which in these parishes is obtained from the flowerings of eucalyptus, chestnut and bramble, giving light or dark honeys according to the season.
The pazo of Vilacoba
Curiosity
A seigneurial house born as a defensive tower in the 15th century and later transformed into a pazo, with chapel and closed courtyard. Nearby lies the ponte de Albar, of five round arches, in the parish of Xavestre.
