What to see and do in Carral

Carral
Village
Carral is a municipality in the province of A Coruña, within its metropolitan area, with about 6,800 inhabitants settled in the valleys of the Barcés and the Brexa, between the montes do Xalo, which to the west rise above 400 metres, and the flatter land opened up by the river Barcés. It is famous for its wood-oven bread, around which both the Bread Festival and the Empanada Festival are held, joining other gastronomic events such as the Cheese Festival or the popular Magosto, besides the patron saint festivities of El Socorro, in September, and of Santo Estevo, on 26 December. On 26 April 1846, Colonel Solís and his officers were shot in Carral, known as the Martyrs of Carral, commemorated since 1904 with a monument erected in their memory.

Execution of the martyrs of Carral
Historical milestone
Twelve officers of the uprising led by Colonel Miguel Solís were executed in Carral on 26 April 1846, after the defeat of the revolt against the dictatorship of General Narváez, when Isabella II was only thirteen years old; the episode became a symbol of 19th-century Galician provincialism. The revolt, begun on 2 April in Lugo, was crushed on the 23rd at the Battle of Cacheiras; Solís took refuge in the monastery of San Martiño Pinario, and he and his companions were tried in Carral three days later and shot that same evening, the colonel in the churchyard of the church of Paleo and the rest at the Fraga do Rei. Ten years later they were declared beneméritos de la Patria (distinguished patriots), and in 1904 the current monument was erected in the centre of Carral, the work of the architect Juan Álvarez Mendoza.
Carral Bread
Food and drink
Round loaf of thick crust and moist crumb baked in a wood-fired oven by the bakers of the concello, with its own fair on the second Sunday of May; it has long supplied the markets of A Coruña.
Festival of a Empanada de Carral
Activity
Event of the first weekend of September in which the bakeries of the concello bake empanadas of every filling, making use of the same dough and the same ovens that give their bread its fame.
