Construction of the Cecebre reservoir Historical milestone · Abegondo, Coruña, A Coruña Image of Abegondo, not of the place itself. The dam on the Mero and Barcés rivers was built between 1975 and 1976 to supply water to A Coruña, flooding 275 hectares of floodplain; the resulting wetland is today a special area of conservation and a refuge for migratory birds. The land needed for the work was acquired between 1974 and 1976 by the municipality of A Coruña, the current owner of the area. On the island left by the reservoir, at Orto, there is also a fortified hilltop castro, rediscovered in 2017, oval in plan and with two defensive lines, today overgrown with eucalyptus and accessible only by boat. 1974-1976 Photo: Miguel Branco (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Abegondo
