What to see and do in Oza-Cesuras

Oza-Cesuras
Village
Oza-Cesuras is a municipality of the province of A Coruña, in the comarca of Betanzos, with about 5,100 inhabitants, created on 6 June 2013 by the merger of the municipalities of Oza de los Ríos and Cesuras, each of which retains its own administrative centre. Its twenty-five parishes are spread across an irregular relief, crossed by the Mendo and Mero rivers, between the Curtis plateau and the river valleys that descend toward the rias of Betanzos and do Burgo. Its economy rests on the primary sector, with livestock farming and forestry work as its main activities. The municipality has three railway stations, at Cesuras, Oza and Piñoi, and preserves more than fifty prehistoric tumuli within its territory.
Church of San Nicolao de Cis
Monument
The church of San Nicolao de Cis, also known as San Salvador de Cis after its dedication, is the only standing part of the monastery founded around the turn of the 9th and 10th centuries, according to López Ferreiro, at the request of doña Paterna and with a charter of King Ordoño II and Queen Elvira documented in the year 911. In the 15th century it became a priory dependent on San Martiño Pinario, in Santiago de Compostela. Of the original Mozarabic-era church, only a marble capital and one corbel survive; the present church is Gothic, in the Romanesque ornamental tradition, and was built in the second half of the 14th century. Its west front opens with a doorway of three pointed archivolts, and it was declared a Monumento Nacional (a former Spanish heritage-protection designation, later replaced by Bien de Interés Cultural) in 1981.
Kiln of Lopo
Curiosity
A Roman-period pottery kiln found in the municipality, uncommon evidence of ancient pottery production in a territory that also has more than fifty catalogued dolmens and numerous hillforts.
The monastery of San Nicolao de Cis
Monument
A monastic community documented from the late 9th or early 10th century, also known as the monastery of Cines or San Salvador de Cis, of which the church and part of the outbuildings survive; it was declared a Monumento Nacional (a former top-level Spanish heritage protection designation) in 1981. It is the most significant monumental complex in a concello of twenty-five parishes. It arose as a double monastery and in the 15th century became a priory dependent on San Martiño Pinario, in Santiago; of the original Mozarabic temple only a capital and a canzorro survive, and the present church, from the second half of the 14th century, is one of the few Gothic examples among Galician monasteries, related to the Betanzos churches of Santa María do Azougue and Santiago. It has a basilical plan with three naves and three polygonal apses.
