What to see and do in Tuéjar

Tuéjar
Village
Tuéjar is a municipality in the comarca of Los Serranos, in the province of Valencia, crossed by the Tuéjar river and the Turia, at 605 metres of altitude, on terrain made rugged by the foothills of the Iberian mountain range; Aleppo pine dominates, and its fauna includes foxes, wild boar, deer and mouflon. Remains found within the municipality, from flint axes to Roman coins and Arab pottery, place the earliest settlements in the Bronze Age. It obtained its founding charter (Carta Puebla) from the widow of Pedro de Jérica, feudal lord, and in 1370 Peter IV of Aragon ordered the castles and places of Chelva and Tuéjar to be repopulated with Christians. Its church of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, Baroque from the 17th century, is a national historic-artistic monument. It today has 1,278 inhabitants (INE 2025).
Festivities of Tuéjar
Activity
Tuéjar has as its patron saints the Inmaculada Concepción, celebrated on 8 December, and San Diego de Alcalá; its Fiestas Mayores de la Purísima, with the traditional 'rodá de la bandera', are held only every five years, in the week of 15 August.
Church of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles de Tuéjar
Monument
The church of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles de Tuéjar (Valencia) is a representative work of early Valencian baroque, with Castilian influences, built during the second half of the 17th century by the architect from Teruel Juan Pérez Castiel, and declared a national historic-artistic monument. It has a Latin-cross plan with interconnected side chapels, sacristies next to the presbytery and a bell tower at the foot; it is covered with a plastered barrel vault in the main nave and a dome on pendentives over the crossing. The portal, of limestone and reached by a flight of steps, is topped with pyramidal pinnacles and an aedicule with a curved pediment. The church preserves abundant, high-relief plaster decoration, characteristic of Pérez Castiel's works.
Weir of the Tuéjar River
Monument
The weir marks the source of the Tuéjar river, a tributary of the Turia, which gives its name to the site officially known as Nacimiento del Río Tuéjar, declared a natural site by decree of the Generalitat Valenciana in 2013. It lies near the foothills of the Javalambre massif, in one of the most rugged territories of the Comunidad Valenciana, and its surroundings, with crystal-clear waters and rugged terrain, are considered one of the most beautiful and best-preserved corners of the Los Serranos comarca. Owing to its rich flora, the area has also been declared a plant micro-reserve under the name Riberas del Río Tuéjar.
