What to see and do in Benagéber

Benagéber
Village
Benagéber is a municipality of Los Serranos, in the province of Valencia, part of the Mancomunidad del Alto Turia, with 176 inhabitants, next to the reservoir of the same name, the geographic heart of the comarca. Built between 1933 and 1953, the reservoir has a capacity of 228 cubic hectometers and occupies most of the Turia valley, the river that crosses the municipal area amid limestone terrain that sometimes exceeds 900 meters and culminates in the south, next to the sierra del Negrete, at 1,252 meters. Its name, of Arabic origin, combines bin or banī, “son” or “sons,” with a term that could refer to the proper name Ŷábir. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot summers and cold winters due to the altitude; toward the Turia a dense forest has formed following the abandonment of farmland.
Reservoir of Benagéber
Nature
The Benagéber reservoir lies on the Turia river, in the geographic heart of the comarca of Los Serranos (Valencia), with spectacular rock walls and a 110-metre dam that was once the tallest in Spain. The project, begun by engineer José Marqués to regulate the flow of the Turia and create irrigation in the Casinos-Llíria plain, was approved in 1931; work began in 1933, was halted during the Civil War, and resumed in 1940 with Republican prisoners redeeming their sentences through labour, finishing in 1955. Since then it has supplied water to Valencia and irrigates the Camp de Túria and l'Horta. It has a capacity of 221 cubic hectometres; near the dam is the small village of Benagéber, with barely 180 inhabitants.
The flooding of old Benagéber
Historical milestone
The reservoir built on the Turia between 1933 and 1953 flooded the old village; its close to one thousand eight hundred households were moved to a new center built beside the hamlet of Nieva or dispersed among other colonization villages.
