What to see and do in Titaguas

Titaguas
Village
Titaguas is a municipality of the comarca of Los Serranos, in the province of Valencia, famous for its illumination with thousands of candles in summer. Rugged with the sierras of Losilla and the Sabinar and drained by the Turia river, it preserves the rock art of the Tío Escribano and remains of a Muslim settlement in the Castillo de la Cabrera area. It was part of the general territory of Alpuente from the division of the kingdoms made by James I in 1240 until, in 1729, Philip V granted it the privilege of Villa Real; as early as 1520 the bishop of Segorbe had already established the vicariate of Titaguas. The municipal area, largely of public use, is covered with forests of pines, holm oaks and junipers and watered by springs reputed for their curative properties. It has 517 inhabitants (INE 2025).

Simón de Rojas Cosme Damián Clemente y Rubio was born in Titaguas on 27 September 1777, the fourth son of the notary Joaquín Clemente Collado, in a family of fifteen siblings. He studied at the Seminary of Segorbe and later in Valencia, where he studied philosophy and theology and stood out as a philologist, mastering Greek, Hebrew, Latin, Arabic, French, English and Italian in addition to his native Valencian; reading Cavanilles's Observaciones sobre el Reyno de Valencia awakened his botanical vocation. In 1800 he moved to Madrid, where he worked at the Real Jardín Botánico. A traveller through North Africa alongside the spy Domingo Badía, alias Ali Bey, and through Andalusia, he became a pioneer of Spanish botany and ampelography and the author of the first scientific classification of grapevine varieties.
