Castelló de Rugat
Village
Castelló de Rugat is a municipality of La Vall d'Albaida on the north face of the Sierra de Benicadell, at the foot of the cerro de la Ermita, at an average altitude of 320 metres; it has 2,345 inhabitants. The earliest evidence of occupation was found in the Llopis and Pany caves, from the Eneolithic, and a Roman-era villa is preserved in the partida de l'Ofra. James I's Reconquest met with fierce resistance here from the chieftain Al-Azraq, which cost the king's knights casualties; once the territory was won, it passed to the barony of Rugat, granted to the Lords of Bellvís until 1499, when it was acquired by the Duke of Gandía, who kept a palace in the town of which remains are still preserved. After the Morisco expulsion of 1609 it was left almost depopulated, until it was repopulated in 1611.
