What to see and do in Aielo de Rugat

Aielo de Rugat
Village
Aielo de Rugat is a municipality at the eastern end of La Vall d'Albaida, in the province of Valencia, on the northern slope of the Sierra de Benicadell, with 160 inhabitants (INE 2025), bordering Montitxelvo, Rugat, Castelló de Rugat and, already in Alicante, Llorca. It was an Andalusi hamlet until the Christian conquest; James I gave it in 1248 to Raimon de Gayllach and it became part of the duchy of Gandía. After the expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609, a settlement charter was granted to the new settlers on 24 September 1612. It preserves the church of la Asunción, from the 18th century, with a square bell tower and a sundial forming part of the regional sundial route, and, at the top of the municipal term, the ruins of a Muslim fortification with a cistern.
