What to see and do in Piles

Piles
Village
Piles is a coastal municipality in the comarca of La Safor, province of Valencia, with 3,151 inhabitants, whose origin lies in a Muslim alquería dependent on Rebollet castle, conquered by Jaume I in 1240. After the expulsion of the Moriscos it was left almost uninhabited and was repopulated with Old Christians; its economy remains based on agriculture, with 373 hectares of citrus irrigated by the Serpis river through the Acequia Comunal de Oliva. On the beach stands the Piles watchtower, built in 1573 against Barbary raids, 13 metres high and 10 in diameter, restored in 1986; together with those of Oliva and El Grau de Gandia it watched over the coastline of Piles, Miramar, Bellreguard and Guardamar de la Safor, and it is today one of the best preserved on the coast.
