What to see and do in Benirredrà

Benirredrà
Village
Benirredrà is the smallest municipality by area in the Safor, with barely 0.4 square kilometres, on the eastern slope of the sierra de Falconera, entirely surrounded by the territory of Gandia. It originated as an Islamic alquería dependent on the castle of Bairén; after the expulsion of the Moriscos it was repopulated, probably with Genoese, Gandia and Majorcan immigrants. Today it has 1,576 inhabitants who live off the irrigated citrus, vegetables and fruit trees watered by the Vernisa river. Its church of Saint Lawrence the Martyr, from 1535, was built over a former mosque and preserves panels from the Ribera school. The neo-Gothic convent of the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart, from the early 20th century and today a school, was a hospital during the Civil War and stands out for its two twin towers.
