What to see and do in Barx

Barx
Village
Barx, in Valencian Bárig, is a municipality in the comarca of La Safor, in the south-east of the province of Valencia, situated on the sierra of the same name, 55 kilometres from the capital; it has 1,501 inhabitants (INE 2025). It belonged to the monastery of Santa María de la Valldigna until it was constituted as a municipality in 1836; its parish church, dedicated to San Miguel Arcángel, was opened in 1873. It retains two 18th-century ice houses that supplied the comarca with ice, and prehistoric remains, among them the Cueva de las Malladetes, as well as the Cova del Parpalló, one of the most important Palaeolithic sites in the Valencian Community. The patron saint festivities, in honour of the Divina Pastora and San Miguel Arcángel, are held in the third week of August.

Mountain range of el Buixcarró
Nature
Mountain massif located between the comarques of Vall d'Albaida, La Safor and La Costera, at whose edge lies the municipality of Barx; crossed by the PR-CV60 route as far as La Drova, within the comarca of La Safor. Its highest point is the peak of l'Aldaia, at 755 metres, followed by Picaio (697 m) and l'Alt de l'Hedra (672 m). The sierra lies at the confluence of the Baetic and Iberian systems, which has produced numerous karst faults, and contains high-quality, pink-coloured marble that has been quarried since Roman times. Besides Barx, the massif is surrounded by the municipalities of Pinet and Quatretonda, in the Vall d'Albaida, Barxeta, in La Costera, and the hamlet of Marxuquera.

Monument
Two 18th-century structures used historically to store and trade snow brought down from the nearby peaks, today a reminder of a vanished traditional industry.
Cave of el Parpalló
Nature
The Cova del Parpalló is one of the most important Palaeolithic sites in the Comunitat Valenciana, with an archaeological sequence spanning thousands of years. It is especially famous for the engraved and painted stone plaquettes found within it, a collection of portable art catalogued by Lluís Pericot i Garcia comprising almost 5,000 pieces and around 6,000 faces with figurative representations: most are geometric signs, though animals such as deer, horses, wild goats and aurochs also appear, along with some possible human figures. Together with nearby sites such as the Cova de les Mallaetes, in the municipality of Barx itself, it has helped to refine the Solutrean-Gravettian sequence and the evolution of the Upper Magdalenian on the Mediterranean seaboard.
