What to see and do in Xeraco

Xeraco
Village
Xeraco, or Jaraco, is a coastal municipality of La Safor, in the province of Valencia, between Gandia and Tavernes de la Valldigna, with 6,149 inhabitants (INE 2025). Its beach, protected by dunes, is one of the best in the province and wins the blue flag every year, although it has grown considerably in recent decades; the town centre lies about 3 kilometres from the coast. The earliest human remains in the municipal area, found in the cueva del Viejo, date back to the Lower Palaeolithic. In the time of Muslim Valencia, Bairén castle granted these lands to the knight Avecendrell, who turned them into the alquería of Jaraco, a lordship from 1479. It retains a historic tower and cistern, next to the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación.
Festivities of Xeraco
Activity
Xeraco's patronal festival is held in the first week of August: the 5th is dedicated to Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación and the 6th to the Santísimo Cristo de la Agonía, both patron saints of the municipality, with religious, musical and firework events.
Church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación de Xeraco
Monument
Parish church of Xeraco, dedicated to Our Lady of the Incarnation, one of the town's main religious buildings. Built in the 18th century in neoclassical style, it has a basilican plan with a single nave and small side chapels. It has two bell towers: the smaller one, attached to the church, is believed to have originally been the minaret of the town's old Arab mosque, reused after the expulsion of the Moriscos.
Tower and Cistern of Xeraco
Monument
Historic tower and cistern of Xeraco, a testimony to the hydraulic and defensive heritage of the comarca of La Safor. The watchtower was probably built in the second half of the 16th century on the banks of the Vaca river to spot attacks by Berber pirates; it has a cylindrical plan, narrows towards the top, is 7.40 metres tall and was restored in the 1980s. The cistern, dating from the 19th century and inaugurated in 1888, is an underground barrel-vaulted, rectangular-plan reservoir, reached by a staircase, which today serves as a museum and exhibition space.
Hermitage of el Santo Cristo de la Agonía de Xeraco
Monument
The Ermita del Santo Cristo de la Agonía, at the crossing of Calle Santíssim Crist and Calle San Francisco in Xeraco's historic center, is an austere single-nave 19th-century shrine dedicated to the municipality's patron saint.
