What to see and do in Polinyà de Xúquer

Polinyà de Xúquer
Village
Polinyà de Xúquer is a Valencian municipality in the Ribera Baixa comarca, situated on the alluvial plain formed by the río Xúquer, at 12 metres above sea level; its territory, devoted almost entirely to irrigated farming, borders Albalat de la Ribera, Benicull, Alzira, Algemesí, Corbera, Cullera, Riola and Sueca. Its name comes from the Latin Paulinus. Together with three other villages it formed part of the Barony of Corbera until its dissolution on 23 September 1836, the date on which its history as an independent municipality begins; the oldest known document dates from 7 April 1254, a deed of land donation that included a mosque with an orchard. It preserves the hermitage of San Sebastián, from the 15th century, rebuilt in the 20th.
Festivities of Polinyà de Xúquer
Activity
The patronal festivities of Polinyà de Xúquer, in the Valencian region of the Ribera Baixa, are held in honour of Saint Sebastian on 20 January. The hermitage bearing his name, a simple 16th-century building, preserves a 1994 altarpiece that reproduces the original destroyed in 1936. The festive programme includes a fair known as a porrat (a traditional market held on the saint's feast day), mass and a procession in honour of the saint, the firing of rockets, and, the night before, a popular dance that opens the celebration.
