What to see and do in Fortaleny

Fortaleny
Village
Fortaleny is one of the smallest municipalities in the Ribera Baixa comarca, in the province of Valencia, built on the right bank of the río Júcar, which borders its flat territory to the north and east. It was founded on 26 January 1239, when James I granted these lands to Guillem de Rocafull for the Hospitaller Brothers of Saint Anthony Abbot to work. Its economy is based on irrigation, with rice and oranges as the main crops. It preserves the Alfonso XIII iron bridge, opened in 1916 over the Júcar, 232 metres long. It has 1024 inhabitants and celebrates its patronal festivities on 17 January.

Bridge of hierro de Fortaleny
Monument
Metal bridge built in 1916 over the Xúquer River, linking Fortaleny with Sueca, refurbished in recent years. Known as the puente de Hierro Alfonso XIII (Alfonso XIII Iron Bridge), it was designed in 1906 by the engineer Arturo Monfort and built by the Barcelona firm Maquinista Terrestre y Marítima; it was inaugurated on 7 May 1916. It has 11 spans and a total length of 232 metres, with a main arch spanning 70.80 metres. At the end of 2015 the Diputación de Valencia carried out its refurbishment for pedestrian and cyclist use, completed to coincide with the bridge's centenary in 2016, and since then it has no longer carried road traffic.
