What to see and do in Riola

Riola
Village
Riola, a municipality of the Ribera Baixa with around 1,800 inhabitants, sits on the right bank of the Júcar, on an alluvial plain devoted to the irrigation of market gardens and rice fields. It first appears documented as Ariola in the Llibre del Repartiment, before the name Riola became fixed; it formed part of the territory of Corbera until becoming independent in 1836. It suffered severe flooding from the overflowing of the Júcar in 1864 and 1916. After the expulsion of the Moriscos in 1646 it was reduced to 59 houses, but it recovered in the 18th century and grew with orange growing in the early decades of the 20th, before the agrarian crisis drove emigration to France. It preserves a 16th-century flour mill and, since 1900, an iron bridge over the Xúquer linking it with Sueca.
Festivities of Riola
Activity
The 5th of August, the main day of Riola's patronal festivities in honor of Santa María la Mayor, is celebrated after the previous evening's 'sopar de germanor' (fellowship dinner), with a cordà (firecracker string), paellas, canoeing on the Xúquer and a tapas route.
