Benicull de Xúquer
Village
Benicull de Xúquer is a municipality of the Ribera Baixa, in the province of Valencia, situated at 30 metres above sea level on the right bank of the río Júcar. Split off from Polinyà de Xúquer, with which it shares much of its history, it did not become an independent municipality until 2003. On 17 November 1973, a group of schoolchildren guided by their teachers found in a cave in the Sima de la Pedrera area Neolithic and Bronze Age remains, including a bell beaker vessel dated between 2200 and 1800 BC. Its only monuments are the church of San Roque and the hermitage of San Bernabé. Its economy has traditionally been based on citrus growing, and among its festivities the Festa del Poble stands out, with a paella contest, on 9 October.
