Castle of Sumacàrcer Monument · Sumacàrcer, La Ribera Alta, Valencia Image of Sumacàrcer, not of the place itself. The castle of Sumacàrcer, also called the castle of Peñarroya, is a fortress of Islamic origin predating the 11th century, situated on a long rocky ridge one kilometre from the village, in the Ribera Alta (Valencia). It was built of rammed earth and masonry over the original settlement, making use of the topography to form two separate enclosures, one to the northwest and one to the southeast. It was abandoned in the 13th century when the population moved next to the river Xúquer, although permission was obtained to rebuild it in the 14th. Today only wall remains and the bases of some towers survive. It has been listed as an Asset of Cultural Interest since 2001, with identifier RI-51-0010688. s.
