Manuel
Village
Manuel is a municipality in La Ribera Alta, in the province of Valencia, situated by the Albaida River, where Valencian is spoken by the majority. Its name comes from the Arabic Mahuel, “outflow or confluence of waters”; it was formerly an Islamic alquería and, after the expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609, received its founding charter in 1610. During the War of the Spanish Succession, on 17 April 1706, it suffered an attack by the Bourbon army, which sacked and burned it: thirty residents of Manuel and neighbouring alquerías died, along with the priest Gaspar Sastre, defending it against an army of 3,000 men heading to attack Alzira. Its only notable monument is the church of Santa Ana, in Tuscan style, built in the 18th century and restored after the war of 1936-39.
