What to see and do in Cheste

Cheste
Village
Cheste is a municipality of La Hoya de Buñol, in the interior of the province of Valencia, with 8951 inhabitants (INE 2025) and home to the Ricardo Tormo motorcycling circuit. Traditionally agricultural, centred on grape growing, it now lives mainly from services. The origin of its name is uncertain: it has been linked to the Greek khestes, a liquid measure connected with olive growing, or to the Latin Sextus, on account of its distance from the ancient Edeta. Already settled in Iberian times, as shown by remains found at the cerro del Castillarejo, the so-called Tesoro de Cheste appeared on its territory in 1864, a hoard of gold and silver jewellery and coins hidden during the Second Punic War.
Circuito Ricardo Tormo
Monument
The Circuito Ricardo Tormo is a 4.005-kilometre racetrack located in Cheste (Valencia), built in 1999 and named in honour of the two-time Valencian motorcycling world champion Ricardo Tormo (1952-1998); it has a capacity of 165,000 spectators. Since its opening it has hosted the Comunidad Valenciana Grand Prix of the Motorcycling World Championship, expected to continue until 2031, and it has also been home to the Superbike World Championship and Formula E. Its design follows the American-style circuit layout, with oval turns, and thanks to its mild winter climate many European teams use it for pre-season testing. In 2024 it hosted the FIA Motorsport Games, and that year the Grand Prix was cancelled because of the DANA storm, with a Solidarity Grand Prix held in Barcelona instead.
Festivities of Cheste
Activity
Cheste celebrates its patron saint, the Virgen de la Soledad Gloriosa de María, on the Sunday after Easter, and its patron saint, San Lucas Evangelista, in the second half of October, a festival linked to the grape harvest with the presentation of the festival queen.
Reymos Wineries of Cheste
Monument
One of the first wine cooperatives in the province of Valencia, specialising in Moscatel wine, in the municipal district of Cheste.
Tradition of the Muscat of Alexandria
Curiosity
The growing of the Moscatel de Alejandría grape goes back centuries in towns such as Cheste, Godelleta and Chiva, and is the basis of one of the signature liqueurs of the Denominación de Origen Valencia.
Parish Church of San Lucas Evangelista of Cheste
Monument
An 18th-century Baroque and Rococo temple whose construction stretched over almost sixty years, an example of the Baroque splendour of classicist orientation that arose in Valencia under the influence of Father Tosca's architectural treatise; its tower, almost 50 metres high, reinterprets in a classicist key the Solomonic Tower of Santa Catalina in Valencia, and replaced the original Gothic church of the 14th-15th centuries that stood on the plaza del Castillo. Its façade, in the Roman manner and with superimposed orders linked by volutes, follows the model inaugurated by the façade of Santo Tomás, also attributed to Father Tosca. Artists such as José Vergara, Antonio Gilabert, Pedro Juan Isart, Tomás Llorens, Antonio Richart and José Esteve Luciano worked on its construction.
Hermitage of San Vicente Ferrer de Cheste
Monument
Hermitage dedicated to the Valencian saint, one of the municipality's religious buildings, alongside the 19th-century manor houses scattered through the town centre.
The Esperantist community of Cheste
Historical milestone
Since 1909 there has existed in the municipality a stable group of Esperanto speakers, a singular case in Spain. The language was taught in the school and in the casino, and even today the town brings together around two hundred practitioners and hosts gatherings of the movement.
Educational Complex of Cheste
Historical milestone
Fernando Moreno Barberá designed between 1967 and 1969 this school city of exposed concrete, with residences, classrooms and sports facilities spread over the slope. It is one of the most cited works of modern Spanish postwar architecture.
Muscat mistela of Cheste
Food and drink
Sweet wine obtained by adding alcohol to moscatel must before it ferments, which preserves the sugar and the aroma of the grape. The local agricultural cooperative, one of the oldest in the country, has made it for generations and sells it loose and bottled.
