Estubeny
Village
Estubeny, one of the smallest municipalities of La Costera, in Valencia, sits on a plateau of the river Sellent, on the border with the Canal de Navarrés, on the remains of an Andalusi alquería. Its earliest remains, in the Coveta Baja and the Peñas Fondas of the Barxilla ravine, date back to the Mesolithic, and there are numerous sites from the Eneolithic and Bronze Age; from Roman times there remains a rural villa at the Llano de los Olivares, with abundant sigillata ware. The earliest writings mentioning Estubeny date from 1248, when James I granted lands of the alquería; the municipality was linked to the Colegiata de Xátiva. Its church of San Onofre was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1748, and on its territory lies La Cabrentà, a Mediterranean forest on the slopes of the Sellent.
