What to see and do in Olocau

Olocau
Village
Olocau is a municipality in the comarca of El Camp de Túria, in the province of Valencia, situated within the Sierra Calderona Natural Park, declared in 2002. It preserves archaeological remains from the Metal Ages, such as the settlement of the Castellet de la Peña Roja, and the Puntal dels Llops, a fortified Iberian watchtower with a double walled enclosure that was part of the defensive network of ancient Edeta; there are also Roman ruins such as the Arquet aqueduct. The Castell del Real overlooks the valley, an Islamic fortress already mentioned in the 10th century and rebuilt around 1084, called in Arabic Hisn Al-Uqab, Castle of the Eagle. Since the late 19th century many of its residents have emigrated to Gavà (Barcelona), where the colony of Olocau origin still raises a falla monument every year. It has 2,534 inhabitants.
Serra Calderona Natural Park
Nature
The Sierra Calderona natural park extends between the provinces of Castellón and Valencia, on the foothills of the Iberian System, between the basins of the Palancia and Turia rivers. This 18,019-hectare area was declared a natural park on 15 January 2002, and owing to its closeness to Valencia, some 20 kilometres away, it is regarded as the city's main green lung. It covers the territory of seventeen municipalities, among them Olocau, where pine forests and cork oak groves predominate. The relief, mostly below 1,000 metres, reaches its highest point at Montemayor, at 1,015 metres; el Gorgo, at 907 metres, is another of its peaks and is accessible from Gátova and Olocau. The area experiences frequent electrical storms, the main cause of its forest fires.
Festivities of Olocau
Activity
The festivities of Olocau, in the Valencian district of Camp de Túria, comprise three celebrations over the year: the patronal festivities of San Roque, from 31 July to 16 August, held together with those of the Virgen de Agosto; those of Nuestra Señora del Rosario, on 7 October; and, in January, the festivity of San Antonio Abad, with a traditional bonfire, blessing of the animals, cordá and distribution of the saint's rolls.
Castle of el Real de Olocau
Monument
A fortress of Islamic origin (Hins al-Uqab, 'castle of the eagle') mentioned in the 10th century, rebuilt around 1084 and linked to the figure of El Cid in his campaign against Morella. It preserves stretches of wall and towers on a promontory overlooking the valley.
Iberian settlement of Puntal dels Llops
Nature
Fortified Iberian watchtower from the 5th century BC, of about 960 m², with a double walled enclosure, a large watchtower and visible urban structures, located on the summit of a promontory in the Sierra Calderona, 427 metres above sea level and more than 150 above the plain, with wide visibility over the Camp de Túria and the barranco de Carraixet. Together with other similar watchtowers, it was part of the defensive and surveillance system of the territory of the Iberian city of Edeta, on the border of Edetan territory. Inside, seventeen rooms can be made out, opening onto a central street that runs through the whole settlement. It is one of the best-preserved Iberian sites in the district.
