What to see and do in San Antonio de Benagéber

San Antonio de Benagéber
Village
San Antonio de Benagéber is a municipality in the comarca of El Camp de Túria, 14 kilometres from Valencia, founded in the early 1950s to relocate part of the population of Benagéber, a village which in 1952 was submerged beneath the waters of the reservoir bearing its name; the settlers were housed in a small valley next to the hamlet of Nieva, and the National Institute of Colonisation distributed 75 plots of land and housing. Initially dependent on Paterna, it became an independent municipality on 8 April 1997. The street layout of the old village is reproduced today in a park, and from here one can access the Bosque de la Vallesa, within the Turia Natural Park.
Origin of San Antonio de Benagéber
Curiosity
San Antonio de Benagéber came into being when the construction of the Benagéber reservoir in 1950 flooded the old village, which was moved to its present location.
Festivities of San Isidro de San Antonio de Benagéber
Activity
Festivities of San Antonio de Benagéber in honour of Saint Isidore, with a procession, a communal meal and the Feria de los Pueblos Amigos (Friendly Towns Fair). The festivity is held on 15 May in honour of the patron saint of farmers and workers, with a procession that sets out from the parish of San Antonio Abad, goes through the town's historic centre and returns to the starting point.
Festivities of la Asunción de San Antonio de Benagéber
Activity
The patron saint festivities of San Antonio de Benagéber, dedicated to the Assumption, the Santos de la Piedra and Saint Roch, include the celebrations in honour of the latter, held in the second and third weeks of August: they begin with bullfighting events, joined by children's entertainment, exhibitions and concerts. On 16 August a mass is held followed by a procession through the historic centre in which volunteer residents carry the image of Saint Roch together with his characteristic dog. The municipality also has Saint Isidore the Farmer as a patron saint, whose festivity is celebrated on 15 May with a procession from the church.
Forest of la Vallesa
Nature
The Vallesa forest is a wooded area within the Turia Natural Park, on the last hills before the plains near the river's mouth, reached from San Antonio de Benagéber. Amid its vegetation it preserves the remains of a Roman-era aqueduct, the Bronze Age settlement of Loma de Betxí, and the fortified Visigothic hillfort of Valencia la Vella. After the major fire of 1994 that affected it, local residents and environmental groups organized to defend the forest, today protected within the natural park.
Park of el Antiguo Benagéber
Curiosity
A municipal park whose paths reproduce the layout and the street names of the original village of Benagéber, submerged beneath the waters of the reservoir in 1952, the origin of present-day San Antonio de Benagéber.
