What to see and do in Segart

Segart
Village
Segart is one of the smallest municipalities in the comarca of El Camp de Morvedre, in the province of Valencia, called Segart de Albalat until 1916. The village sits at 256 metres above sea level, at the foot of the mountains Garbí, La Mola and Puntal de l'Abella, the latter the highest in the comarca at 654 metres, on rugged terrain that descends toward the Palancia river, cut through by the ravines of la Font, el Meliquet and Segart. Despite its altitude, the climate is Mediterranean due to the proximity of the sea, about fourteen kilometres away, and the municipal area, covered with pines, rosemary and thyme, has been part of the Sierra Calderona natural park since 2002. La Mola de Segart, recognisable by its millstone-shaped cliff, offers fine views towards the Sierra de Espadán.
Castle of Segart
Monument
A 13th-century fortress of Muslim origin high on a hill above the village, of which the remains of walls and a cistern survive; it is currently undergoing recovery and structural consolidation.
Calvary and Chapel of Sant Josep i la Creu of Segart
Monument
The Calvary complex of Segart, crowned by the chapel of Sant Josep i la Creu of 1894, beside an old watchtower known as l'Ermita.
Church of la Purísima de Segart
Monument
Parish church built of rubble masonry in Segart, constructed between 1796 and 1802 in late Classicist style, dedicated to the Immaculate Conception; a plaque on its façade recalls that it was raised “in honour and glory” of this advocation, whose name was given by Saint John of Ribera during his time as Archbishop of Valencia. The poverty of the people of Segart, who had to pay for the works, led to them being granted permission to work on them on Sundays and public holidays. It was raised to entry-level parish status on 28 December 1953, having previously been a chapel of ease of the parish of Albalat dels Tarongers. In the 1991 restoration, the original bell tower was replaced with a new one with three arches, with a main bell from the 17th century and two others, called Santa Cruz and Ecce Homo.
