Castle of Petrés Monument · Petrés, El Camp de Morvedre, Valencia The castle of Petrés, or castle-house of the Baron of Petrés, dominates the road to Sagunto from a hillock. It is a distinctive fortified palace, square in plan, built between the late 14th and early 15th centuries, after the Reconquest of the Campo de Murviedro by James I, by order of Joan Aguiló Romeu, to whom Peter the Ceremonious granted the title of first Baron of Petrés in 1340, on the remains of an Arab structure. It follows the scheme of the Valencian Gothic palace-fortress, with the defensive function already relaxed in favour of the residential one: it is entered through a round arch leading to a courtyard with a staircase and an underground cistern. After the Aguiló lineage died out in the late 16th century and a long period of abandonment, it fell into ruin; it has been under restoration since 2016. It was declared a historic-artistic monument in 1983. siglo XIV Photo: B25es (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Petrés
