What to see and do in Gilet

Gilet
Village
Gilet is a municipality of 4,011 inhabitants in the comarca of El Camp de Morvedre, in the province of Valencia, nestled in the southeast of the Sierra Calderona next to the Palancia river, at 83 metres above sea level. On the mountain of La Peña remains of an Iberian settlement have been found, with pottery ranging from the Bronze Age to the Middle Ages, and at the Font de la Vidriera another Romanised Iberian settlement from the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC. The earliest records of the village place it as an Arab hamlet; after the conquest by James I, the lands were given to Juan de Zaragoza and later to Bernardo Palau. Its monastery of the Holy Spirit, Franciscan and dating from the 17th century, includes the Toliu cave, with a cave painting of a possible eyed idol from the early Bronze Age.
Sierra Calderona (Gilet side)
Nature
The Monasterio de Santo Espíritu, founded in 1402 by Queen María de Luna in the valle del Toliu, stands on the southeastern slope of the Sierra Calderona, beside the Palancia basin, in the municipal district of Gilet. Rebuilt in the 17th century, it today houses a Franciscan guesthouse that serves as a starting point for numerous hiking routes through the mountains.
Festivities of Gilet
Activity
Gilet celebrates its main festival in honour of its patron saint, the Archangel San Miguel, on the last Friday and last Sunday of August.
Monastery of el Santo Espíritu
Monument
The monastery of the Holy Spirit, or of Sancti Spiritu, stands in the very heart of the mountain, in the municipality of Gilet (El Camp de Morvedre, Valencia), one of the most singular religious sites in the comarca. It was founded in 1403 by María de Luna, wife of King Martin I of Aragon, after the pacification of Sicily, with the confirmation of Pope Benedict XIII; in 1404 the founder bequeathed the building and substantial income to the convent. After periods of abandonment, the present church was inaugurated in 1692. During the Peninsular War it served as a hospital, and in 1889 it was declared a mission college for the Holy Land and Morocco. Today, declared a Bien de Relevancia Local (a local-level heritage protection designation), it preserves a museum with historic pieces and documents and offers guest lodging for study and prayer.
Viewpoint of El Garbí
Nature
Natural viewpoint located on the summit of El Garbí, at about 593 metres of altitude, in the Sierra Calderona. It is the most visited peak of the massif because of its easy access and the viewpoint that offers a wide panorama over the comarcas of the Huerta Norte and el Camp de Morvedre; being one of the peaks closest to Valencia, it also attracts those seeking snow in winter.
Cave of el Toliu
Nature
A cave in the Toliu valley, on the grounds of the Monastery of Santo Espíritu, which preserves a rock painting in pale red representing what may be an oculate idol from the beginning of the Bronze Age.
The founding of the monastery of Santo Espíritu
Historical milestone
María de Luna, wife of Martin the Humane, founded at the beginning of the 15th century the Franciscan monastery at the foot of the Calderona in thanksgiving for the pacification of Sicily; it was for centuries the great religious center of the valley.
The oranges of Gilet
Food and drink
Citrus irrigation displaced traditional dry farming in the twentieth century and today the orange is the district's main crop, in a village that until the nineties also lived from palm brooms.
