Atzeneta del Maestrat
Village
Atzeneta del Maestrat is a municipality of L'Alt Maestrat, in the province of Castellón, located in a valley at the foot of the Peñagolosa, next to the river Monleón. Its name comes from the Arabic az-Zanāta, after the Berber tribe that settled in the place. After the conquest by Jaime I, it was granted in fief to noble warriors from Perpignan linked to the Order of the Temple, and given in 1235 to Blasco de Alagón; his grandson granted a charter of settlement in 1272. The castle, first linked to the Temple, later passed to the Order of Montesa. It preserves the Vila Closa as its historic core, the Torre de la Presó of the medieval wall, today an interpretation centre, and a Renaissance church from the 17th century with a Baroque altarpiece from 1744.

Tower of la Presó de Atzeneta del Maestrat
Monument
The Torre de la Presó ("Prison Tower"), on Calle de Sant Bartomeu, forms part of the old medieval walls of Atzeneta del Maestrat. It is a square tower with windows protected by thick iron bars, which served as the town's prison from 1853 until the 1960s. Fully restored, it now houses the town's History Interpretation Centre.
Palace of el Comendador de Montesa de Atzeneta
Monument
Known as the Palacio del Comendador de la Setena de Culla, the building was erected in the 16th century as the seat of the commander of the Order of Montesa, who governed Atzeneta from 1316. It later served as a hospital before becoming the town hall. It retains an interior courtyard and a Gothic-style window; today the ground floor houses a centre for the elderly and a cultural auditorium, while the upper floors contain municipal offices, an exhibition hall, the library and a computer room.
Castle of Atzeneta del Maestrat
Monument
The remains of Atzeneta castle, located on the outskirts of the town next to stretches of wall and manor houses from the old medieval fortified precinct, belong to an 11th-century structure of which only the keep and a chapel survive today. The castle is also the central image on the town's traditional coat of arms, used since at least the 18th century.

Curiosity
The Vila Closa is the oldest historic core of Atzeneta del Maestrat, in the Castellón district of l'Alt Maestrat, surrounded by the Verdunc, la Font and Rambla de Atzeneta gorges, which shaped its original defensive layout. In some stretches of its urban plan it retains an important medieval and Renaissance heritage, with remains of the old medieval walls and the Torre de la Presó, vestiges of the precinct's fortified character.
The grant of Atzeneta to Blasco de Alagón
Historical milestone
James I donated the place to the noble Blasco de Alagón, who passed it to his daughter; in 1272 a settlement charter was granted to the new residents and the castle ended up in the hands of the Temple and, later, of the Order of Montesa.
