What to see and do in La Torre d'en Besora

La Torre d'en Besora
Village
La Torre d'en Besora is one of the smallest municipalities in the comarca of l'Alt Maestrat, in the Land of Valencia, bordering Culla and Vilar de Canes. It takes its name from the watchtowers of the municipality, among them the Torre Madoc, on the road towards Culla. It was a former Arab farmstead with a defensive tower, occupied by Jaime I and belonging to the tinença of Culla; in 1269 Guillem d'Anglesola gave it in allod to Guillem de Besora, who gave it its name and granted it a charter of settlement in 1274. Its economy was traditionally based on dryland farming, olive and almond growing, and livestock raising. It preserves the church of Sant Bertomeu, built in 1702 on the remains of the castle, and the old Mina de Ferro or Mina Esperança, restored and open to guided visits.

Of the original church, only the entrance arch to the present sacristy survives, inscribed with the date 1528, from the 16th century. The present building was constructed during the 18th century, as shown by the 1702 inscription on the doorway. Torre Madoc de La Torre d'en Besora
Monument
16th-century watchtower, also known as Torre Amador, located in the La Mola area, very close to the path linking Culla with La Torre d'en Besora, in the Alto Maestrazgo. It formed part of the defensive system spread across the former domain of Culla castle, alongside other towers such as those of El Palomar and La Marquesa, and served to watch over the district's mountainous territory. It is square in plan, with a ground floor and two upper storeys, built of rubble masonry reinforced with ashlar at the corners; a farmhouse was later added onto it. It has been listed as a bien de interés cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) since 1985.
