What to see and do in Benafigos

Benafigos
Village
Benafigos is a small municipality in the comarca of the Alt Maestrat, in the province of Castellón, whose name means border rock. Set on a hill between the river Monleón and the Benafigos ravine, it preserves twisting, narrow streets amid the remains of the castle that gave rise to the village. Four kilometres from the town centre, in the secluded valley of the Ortisella, stands the sanctuary of the Virgin of the same name, built in 1567 next to a hundred-year-old elm, three fountains and stone barbecue hearths. Its parish church, from the 13th century and remodelled in the 18th, stands possibly on the walls of the old castle. The municipality, mountainous, reaches 1,083 metres at the Coll del Vidre and borders Culla, Adzaneta and Vistabella del Maestrazgo.
Festivities of Benafigos
Activity
Every 8th of September, the feast of the Virgen de la Ortisella, Benafigos celebrates its patron saint with a solemn Mass, a procession and a pilgrimage to the hermitage built in 1567.
Hermitage of la Virgen de la Ortisella
Monument
The Ermita de Nuestra Señora la Virgen de la Ortisella lies about three kilometres north of Benafigos, on the so-called Camino de la Ermita, and is listed as a Bien de Relevancia Local (an asset of local heritage significance). The sanctuary, built in 1567, was extended with various sections added to the rear and left side of the church; its façade, painted white like the rest of the complex, bears a small bell-gable with the date 1657 and, at its base, between two faces symbolising the sun and the moon, the date of a further renovation in 1803. It has two bays with external buttresses and a small sacristy added in 1853, with a 20th-century guesthouse. Facing the church stands a centuries-old elm, and beside the shrine flow three springs - de Dalt, de Baix and de Darrere - to which curative properties are attributed.
Church of San Juan Bautista de Benafigos
Monument
The Church of Saint John the Baptist in Benafigos, in the province of Castellón, is a Gothic church begun in the 13th century, one of the oldest of this style in the province, and remodelled in the 18th; it was possibly built on the walls of the village's old castle, whose ramparts remain incorporated into several houses in the town, giving it a fortress-like external appearance. Its front façade, from the 17th century, was restored in 2003, and inside it retains well-preserved pointed arches and the chapel of the Virgen de la Ortisella, from the 20th century. The parish museum holds an altarpiece of Saint John the Baptist with panels of the Baptism of the Lord, Saint John the Baptist and Saint Onuphrius, and others depicting the flagellation of the Virgin, dated to the 15th century.
Old prison of Benafigos
Curiosity
Building that served as the municipal prison until the Civil War and today hosts exhibitions and cultural events, a reminder of the administrative past of this small village in the Alt Maestrat.
The battle of Benafigos against the French
Historical milestone
The bands of the guerrilla leader Asensio Nebot, el Frare, clashed in 1812 beside the village with the troops of the French general Mazzuchelli during the Peninsular War, in a comarca that was a habitual refuge of the guerrillas.
