What to see and do in Palanques

Palanques
Village
Palanques is one of the smallest municipalities in Els Ports, in Castellón, with 34 inhabitants (INE 2025). It is located in mountainous terrain near the Bergantes river, in the north-west of the comarca, already on the border with Teruel, and borders Zorita del Maestrazgo, Morella and Forcall. According to the family tradition recorded in unofficial local chronicles, the village owes its name to Guillén de Palanques, an Aragonese knight said to have been born around 1205 who joined James I in the conquest of Morella in 1232; as a reward, the king is said to have granted him the lands that today make up the municipality, which would have taken his name. There are no documents confirming this genealogy, but it is considered the origin of the surname Palanques. The municipality preserves remains of rock art and of an ancient Roman road.
