What to see and do in Villores

Villores
Village
Villores is one of the smallest municipalities in Els Ports, in the province of Castellón, situated on a hillside beside the Bergantes river, with a continental climate and mild summer nights. Conquered by Blasco de Alagón, who in 1233 gave the place to the convent of nuns of Sigena, it was part of the territory of Morella without ever becoming one of its hamlets, as it was a lay lordship. With 51 inhabitants, its economy was based on agriculture and the production of espadrilles. It preserves the old palace of the Marquises of Villores, today the seat of the town hall, next to remains of the Muslim castle and the hermitage of the Virgin of Buen Suceso. In April its residents make a pilgrimage to la Balma on the Saturday before the Monday of San Vicente, and in August they celebrate their patronal festivities in honour of the Virgin of the Rosary.

Activity
La Balma has long been an important centre of pilgrimage for the towns of Castellón and Teruel, and in the eighteenth century it became famous as a destination for those making pilgrimage against 'els malignes', the so-called possessed, among them women who came from Aragón, including Caspe. The sanctuary, declared a historic-artistic monument in 1979, is also a summer resort today. From Villores, the pilgrimage is held every April, on the Saturday before the Monday of San Vicente.
